Year-by-year projection

How this projection works

Each year: your contribution (capped at the IRS limit of $24,500 for 2026) plus the employer match is added to the balance, then the balance grows at your expected return. Salary grows at your raise rate, so contributions rise with it.

Balance(t) = [ Balance(tโˆ’1) + Contribution + Match ] ร— (1 + r)

Today's dollars divides the projected balance by (1 + inflation)years so you can compare it to current prices.

Common employer match pattern: "100% match on the first 6% of salary" โ€” meaning if you contribute at least 6%, you capture the full match. Not contributing enough to get the full match is leaving free money on the table.

Note: Assumes contributions at year-start and a constant real return; actual markets fluctuate, sometimes sharply. Catch-up contributions (age 50+: an extra $8,000 in 2026) are not modeled. Estimates only โ€” not financial advice.
